E-government and e-commerce legitimate the dominance of social web media , and crimes!

A Response For [1] “Virtual Friendship and the New Narcissism” Written By “Christine Rosen

Web social is being one of the most widely spread social activity in this era. Social media such as facebook, twitter, YouTube, myspace, etc prevailed and even dominate other mass media like TV and Cinema.

You may predict that I’m going to show some statistic or articles that support my words. No, I’m not! Surprise!!! Then how to demonstrate these phenomena?

I will ask the parent with whom their children have internet access (Ipad, laptop, etc). How much time their children spend behind their Ipad, YouTube watching cartoon, facebook with friends, or playing interactive games.

I think you got the idea.

Therefore, people and especially teen age and young ones tend to give a lot of information about themselves, family, friends, etc. Often, all that is done on the basis of goodwill.

On one hand, « L’ouverture en inquiète plus d’un. La vidéo suivante illustre satiriquement une vision cauchemardesque de ce qui peut arriver dans un réseau ouvert. » [2]

But let’s define Pourriel [3]
“The pourriels can be simple advertisings, but also:
- Messages emitted by virus and propagating them;
- Incentives to visit sites fraudulents that capture confidential news (cheat, trick, defraud or phishing);
- Swindles promising the fortune after payment of a sum of money by the victim (stock market manipulations, scam);
- Messages of rumours or of disinformation
- Etc. »

What if anyone took advantages from this info?  What will happen? Nightmares? Criminals? Who knows........

 “The danger posed by strangers who use social networking sites to prey on children is real; there have been several such cases. This danger was highlighted in July 2007 when MySpace booted from its system 29,000 sex offenders who had signed up for memberships using their real names. There is no way of knowing how many sex offenders have MySpace accounts registered under fake names.” [1]

For example, “Carnegie Mellon researchers Alessandro Acquisti and Ralph Gross wrote in 2006. In a survey of Facebook users at their university, Acquisti and Gross “detected little or no relation between participants’ reported privacy attitudes and their likelihood” of publishing personal information online. Even among the students in the survey who claimed to be most concerned about their privacy — the ones who worried about “the scenario in which a stranger knew their schedule of classes and where they lived” — about 40 percent provided their class schedule on Facebook, about 22 percent put their address on Facebook, and almost 16 percent published both.”  [1]

What about laws do they prosecute those offenders?

NC Supreme Court: Social media ban for sex offenders remains for now

“The 2008 legislative package came about at a time that state attorneys general across the country were raising concerns about such social media sites as Facebook and MySpace, hoping to protect users from sexual predators using the networks.”

Pennsylvania state Rep. Mike Schlossberg says:

"We all know that the Internet can give child predators the opportunity to prey on the innocent,"

In addition,

“Previous research into child sexual abuse had shown that offenders spent a number of months befriending a young person, and in some cases their family as well, to prepare for the abuse. This new research suggests that the grooming process by sexual offenders operating on the internet is much faster. Rather than selecting one particular vulnerable person to abuse, some offenders appear to target numerous young people until they find someone who is willing to meet them.

There are however examples of some online groomers targeting specific young people, using information that a young person shares online to develop credible approaches. This research also shows that sexual offenders who use the internet are becoming very technologically-advanced, often operating in communities sharing indecent imagery between countries. In addition sexual offenders are increasingly using social networking sites such as MSN and Facebook.” [5]  [6]

Professor Julia Davidson, a lead researcher from Kingston University, said. "The research shows that the grooming period has been speeded up with chat room communication becoming almost immediately sexualised. Offenders may try to justify this by claiming their behaviour is fantasy or simple role-play when using the internet." [7]

Stephen Webster, the lead researcher on the European Online Grooming Project, said: "This is a public health issue and we need an immediate and informed debate about how we effectively manage online sexual offenders," he said. "We have a public safety obligation to raise awareness and empower parents and carers to use the internet safely" [7] . As part of the public safety initiative, the research would also be able to inform the development of the most robust intervention programmes for online sexual offenders, he added.

Yes, it is extremely dangerous, and it’s extremely important to raise public awareness about this dangerous offenders, and to implement preventive programmes and society awareness as it has direct impact on our society, families and children, As social network becomes a mass media and E-Governments and Giant private E-Commerce companies provided the infra-structure,  corner stones , and dominance for using such web social, public, and governmental network. Therefore it is not just the responsibility of family to be aware of such offenders but government embracing such technologies and paving the way for it. On the other hand, Governments should in parallel implement the rules and the restrictive measures for the abusers, criminals and predators that we saw them through centuries awaiting for the innocent prey and vulnerable human being to exploit, control, abuse , and even kill them
